
The University of Rhode Island Outreach Center is announcing the Gardening with Native Plants Workshop Series to take place at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center this fall.
Interested gardeners can save 20% on registration fees when signing up for the entire series. Space is limited so register today! All classes will be held at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.
The series is as follows:
Class 1:
Gardening with Wildflowers
Instructor: Karen Asher, RI Wild Plant Society
October 11, 6:30-7:30
Karen will present a digital slideshow featuring both common and uncommon RI wildflowers that demonstrate a succession of colorful blooms from early spring through late fall. Garden enthusiasts and designers will find the show an inspiration to incorporate more native plants in perennial borders and forested edges on the home landscape.

Class 2:
Site Assesment for Informed Design
Instructor: Kate Venturini, URI Outreach Center
October 20, 6:30-7:30
Kate will discuss the importance of Site Assessment as an essential part of the restorative landscape design process. She will use a recently developed 'Site Assessment Checklist' to show how information about existing natural, built, and social elements on the home landscape is gathered and organized to increase the success of native planting design and reduce the chances of landscape failure.

Class 3:
Native Plant System Design for Habitat Enhancement
Instructor: Kate Venturini, URI Outreach Center
November 3, 6:30-8:00 pm
Kate will discuss the consequences of suburban and urban development, invasive plant competition, and attack by non-native diseases and insects on natural areas and will introduce the native plant system design concept as a potential 'fix' and habitat enhancer. She will review the characteristics and components of native plant systems as they relate to siting, design and installation on home landscapes.

Class 4:
Gardening for Birds: Incorporating Native Plants as Wildlife Habitat
Instructor: Rosanne Sherry, URI Outreach Center
November 15, 6:30-8:00 pm
Rosanne will discuss the options for and benefits of attracting birds to the home landscape through the use of plants native to eastern North America. She will also discuss how native plants can be reintroduced on home landscapes to displace aggressive invasive species, attract beneficial pollinators and reduce the need for pesticides.
