Mayor Taveras was joined by members of RI's Congressional delegation, the Governor, State Senate and House leaders and institutional and academic officials in a bid for a regional US Patent and Trademark Office in the city of Providence.
Citing our affordability and quality of life, proximity to multi-billion dollar markets and R&D centers, and access to major cities along the Boston-Washington corridor, the dozen-plus officials urged the US Department of Commerce to strongly consider Providence in its selection of one of two remaining regional offices nationwide. (Detroit is the first of three sites chosen.)
No date has been set for that decision but if it is successful in this bid, Providence will raise its profile in the knowledge economy, increase the likelihood of entrepreneurs coming to the city to commercialize inventions and products, and will generate increased opportunities for new residents, workers and businesses.
