10th Anniversary Commemoration of 9-11-01

"We Will Never Forget, We Will Be The Best That We Can Be!"

When: Friday, September 9, 2011

Where: Nathanael Green Middle School 720 Chalkstone Ave., Prov., RI Esek Hopkins Middle School 480 Charles Street, Prov., RI.

What: Each school will have Educational Assemblies which will consist of student performances, educational presentations, and a guest speaker - a Providence Fire Fighter who assisted the men and women who worked at Ground Zero days after the attacks in 2001.

Each school will also have an outdoor observance which will include a school wide formation made up of all the students, and staff of each school.

Esek Hopkins will create a formation of about 700 students and staff and it will be "U.S.A."

Nathanael Green Middle School will create a formation of about 1100 students and staff and it will be "9-11". Included in the 9-11 will be symbols to represent each area attacked on 9-11-01. The 9 will be shaped as the Pentagon, the 11 will be made up of the American Flag and represent the Twin Towers, and the dash will be made up of a mark-up of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to honor the actions taken by the passengers of Flight 93.

Both outdoor programs will include a Bagpiper from the RI Fire Fighters Pipe and Drum Organization, a Color Guard Unit from the RI National Guard, Providence Fire Fighters, Providence Police Officers, and a performance of the National Anthem by a Providence Police Officer.

The National Guard Color Guard Unit will lead the formation of the entire student body, as a Bagpiper plays. The students will walk through the Providence Fire Department Ladder Truck and Engine Truck. The formation, once done will then be surrounded by First Responders which will include the Providence Fire Fighters, The Providence Police Officers with Squad Car and Horse Mounted Officers, and members of The RI National Guard.

The Ladder truck will raise the American Flag, as the bagpiper plays. A member of the Providence Police Department, will sing the National Anthem, this will be followed by a school wide Pledge of Allegiance, a reading of a Moment of Silence Reflection, followed by a school wide moment of silence. The program will end with the bagpiper playing Amazing Grace.

Each school will also be sharing curriculum with the students and Nathanael Greene is also having a Decorate Your Classroom Door Program with a Patriotic Theme.

Why: To pause on this anniversary to remember the heroes and victims, and their families. To teach our students about first responders and the events of 9-11-01. To teach our students about civic responsibility, community, and patriotism.

Additional Information: Reporters and photographers should be on location by 8:30 at Esek Hopkins and at 12:30 at N. Greene for the outside observance programs. For the School Assemblies, reporters and photographers should be on location at 8:15 or 9:15 or 10:15 on Friday at N. Greene Middle School.
