Mayor Taveras today expressed sadness and condolences over the death of Captain Frank A. Reddington.
Captain Reddington leaves behind his wife Marge and two sons, Daniel and Brendan.
He served the department for 23 years, serving at the Branch Avenue, Downtown, and Broad Street stations. He was appointed to Providence Fire Department on October 3, 1988, and served in Special Hazards 1 as a Firefighter. He was promoted to Lieutenant on June 30, 2004 and served at Engine 10. He was posthumously promoted to Captain.
He was awarded a unit commendation on three occasions. He was also a member of the Providence Fire Department's Honor Guard, and chairman of the union's charity committee.
"I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Frank Reddington, who served honorably and bravely throughout a distinguished career in the Providence Fire Department. I offer my sincere condolences to Captain Reddington's wife and family, as well as the men and women of the Fire Department," said Mayor Taveras.
Mayor Taveras has ordered City flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Captain Reddington.
"It takes a very special person to be a firefighter - someone who loves to help people and has the courage to face the unknown with confidence and determination. Captain Reddington possessed all of these qualities. The Providence Fire Department and the entire Department of Public Safety mourn his passing," said Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré.
Calling hours for Captain Reddington will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bellows-Falso Funeral Home.
A funeral mass will be held at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on Friday, followed by the burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Cumberland.
