The Mayor's Fellowship and Internship Programs

Overview

Fellowships and Internships in the City of Providence are an exciting and creative way to get involved in the community, while also gaining valuable work experience. Interns are able to see first-hand how the City functions on a daily basis, as well as learn how long term goals and policies are constructed. Students gain hands-on experience with city government and develop skills that will serve them well in future occupations.

City Internships

Internships in the City are unpaid, volunteer positions and there is great flexibility in scheduling internship hours with no minimum time commitment. Students may choose to work during the summer, school semesters or even year-round.

To apply for an internship, email Elise Swearingen and schedule an appointment to complete an application and an interview. Positions are available in a number of city departments and great care is taken to match student interests and skills with the needs of each office.

Mayoral Fellowships

2012 Program Description: The Mayoral Fellowship Program is a full time, eleven-week program that runs from June 4 through August 10, 2012, with a one week vacation included in the eleven weeks. The Fellows will be placed with a City Department to get a better idea of how City Government works. Each Fellow will receive a $2,000.00 stipend at the end of the Fellowship Program.

Mayor Taveras realizes the importance of hands on work experience. The students chosen for a Fellowship will have a unique learning experience designed to work with their own talents.

Application deadline: Friday, May 4, 2012
To apply students must:

  1. Have completed four semesters of college.
  2. Complete the Fellowship Application.
  3. Submit two letters of recommendation, a resume, and (preferably) a college transcript.

After review of the above, an individual under consideration will be scheduled for an in-person interview at Providence City Hall.
